This exhibit is an act of cultural preservation, an act of rebe lion, a stride towards generational healing that has sent me on a journey through my family’s history.
This exhibition is a colection of moments and memories that have propeled us into this future. “The Garden that Rita Grew” is a metaphorical and multifaceted exploration and experience of Queen Rita Marley through my lens as her eldest grandchild - a filmmaker, activist and cultural curator.
Beyond the scope of being the legendary Bob Marley’s wife, she is My Grandma Rita; a powerful and visionary Queen of Development recognized through her works in Africa and the diaspora.
Her leadership in culture, business, music and philanthropy has secured the Marley legacy as one of resilience, creativity, and social advocacy. In this exhibition, Rita Marley’s story is immortalized across various mediums. This includes a curated photographic retrospective, personal quotes and anecdotes, live music and visual art created by both established and emerging artists from a surrealist and Afrofuturist lens.
I acknowledge the seeds that My Grandma Rita has planted in my own consciousness as I continue to discover how those roots manifest through me. My chalenge now is to continue the work of my grandmother, through the words of H.I.M Emperor Haile Selassie: ‘so that the hungry can be fed, the sick nourished, the homeless sheltered and the infants cared for.’
